Delve into danger

ART // A living symbiotic sculpture of erotic entanglement, in which art and the body, bondage and consent intertwine.

In the act of submitting, where is the locus of power? Does it lie, in fact, with the person submitting – who gives up everything, including doubt, insecurities and fear? Or does it reside in the other, supposedly in control, who is nonetheless beholden through a contract of care and responsibility? In Submission, this relationship of yielding and ritual of power exchange is made manifest through rope bondage: an expression of erotic surrender and spiritual exploration. Trust overcomes fear and pain as corporeal forms are immobilised and suspended in precarious and vulnerable positions. About these fragile bodies: deadly machinery from a bygone age, and ominous pendulums of rock and stone.

Dangerous Thinkers
“I draw an interest in transcending the body and mind through the use of extreme sensation, and the use of physicality and eroticism as a pathway to awe.”
GARTH KNIGHT

Garth Knight works with and photographs rope and bodies as sculptural forms, creating allegorical installations that combine Zen concepts and pagan mythology with the traditions of kinbaku and rope bondage. His tableau of intricate, decorative networks connect ideas of strength and pleasure with those of surrender and abandonment. His installations and performance focus on the ritual of making, becoming an act of meditation and a process leading to illumination. Complex installations are created over many days, with bodies being intermittently bound into the sculpture – a journey into another world using extreme sensations as pathways to transcendence and awe. His works have been exhibited widely in Australia and internationally and he has self-published several books. He lives and works in Sydney.
